Flights & Travel
The nearest airport to Hvar is Split Airport (SPU). There are many options for flights, depending on departure airport and budget. There are many different variations depending on where you are coming from, how long you are planning to stay and your budget. Some of you may want to fly into Dubrovnik and visit the beautiful city there, especially for any Game of Thrones fans, and as per the section below you can then get a slightly longer ferry from Dubrovnik to Hvar. Being an island, Hvar is only accessible by ferry. The nearest mainland airport is Split, with flights arriving here from most UK airports. On arrival at Split, you will need to take a 30-45 minute bus or taxi journey to the main marina/port in Split. If arranging your own transfers, you can book a taxi, which is about €50 in one direction. We did this recently and booked via Welcome Pickups https://www.welcomepickups.com/ and worked really well! Cost of the ferry is about €10-15 per person, in one direction, so you may need to consider these costs versus a package holiday and the 20% discount in booking directly with the hotel. The ferry journey is about an hour from Split to Hvar. Please note that you need to get the ferry to Hvar Town. It is quite confusing that the Island is call Hvar, with the main town also being call Hvar, but some of the ferries do go to other places on the island such as Stari Grad, so please be mindful of that and get the ferry to the right location! You can book your ferry tickets via https://www.ferryhopper.com/ and again worked out really well! If you book a package holiday with someone like Jet2 or TUI, your transfers and ferry tickets will be sorted for you, with someone at Jet2 meeting you at every step of your journey. Just to reiterate if you book your hotel/flights separately you will need to book your own transfer to the marina/port and arrange your own ferry tickets. Please note the ferries can sell out so purchasing in advance is advised. Sometimes the ferries do not operate around lunchtime, so depending on the timing of your flight and transfers you may have a short wait at the marina in Split, however there are many bars and restaurants here where you can wait before your ferry arrives. The last ferry to Hvar leaves around 7pm as well, so you may want to consider this depending on your flight times. Equally you may want to organise your own private boat transfer https://www.split-hvar-taxi-boat.com If you are flying into Dubrovnik to visit there or other areas in Croatia first, then you can get a ferry from Dubrovnik to Split, which is about 3 hours. Please note that getting on and off the ferries is not particularly access friendly, with passengers required to haul their own luggage on and off the ferry up a short ramp. Therefore you may want to travel with others, or please let us know when you are arriving (07824466793 or 07826195244) and we will gladly meet you at the marina in Hvar to help you off. Once you arrive in Hvar, the ferry will dock at the top end of the marina, located near the Don Quijote restaurant (if looking on google maps). This is not accessible by car and is a cobbled walkway. If you are staying in one of the main hotels, a little van will be there to pick your baggage up and take this to the hotel for you, but you may have to walk to the hotel separately or get a separate mini bus provided by the hotel or travel company. If you are in a B&B or apartment you will have to do this yourself. It is also worth noting that Hvar isn’t one of the most accessible places, the main marina area is predominantly pedestrian access only and the best way to access most hotels is along the main walkway that runs around the edge of the island. This main walkway is very flat. Taxis can meet you just behind the main square area at the Town’s Bus Stop (Dolac, 21450, Hvar, Croatia) to take you to your hotel by road if this is needed and not already provided for. If you have booked a package holiday you will likely get a transfer via road to your hotel from this location as well (unless of course you are in a hotel in the marina area and therefore will not need it). It is worth being aware that the town of Hvar is quite hilly/steep behind the main marina area so it is worth bearing this in mind if you have booked your own apartment/hotel as you may have quite a steep walk with your luggage and this can catch some people out. However, if you are unsure, then please just ask us and we can helpfully advise. It is quite a journey from home to Hvar, but the beauty makes it worth it. It is worth ensuring you allow sufficient time in your planning for the plane, transfer, ferry and travel to the hotel on your travel days.
