Uncover the magic of sharing your special moments with guests, from the first encounter to the proposal, in a light-hearted and engaging manner that reflects your one-of-a-kind bond.

The wedding story section on your wedding website is a brilliant opportunity to take a trip down memory lane with your partner while giving your guests a personalised insight into your journey so far. Some guests might not know how and where your relationship actually started if you've been together for a while, and others might not have seen your engagement snaps yet.

A nice way to share those funny, heartfelt, and special moments that have shaped who you are as a couple is to recount your love story on your wedding website. Details of how you first met, your first date, your proposal story, and the most memorable moments from your relationship so far should be included. This section may prove to be really insightful for extended family members or loved ones because it provides some background information before your wedding ceremony and celebration begins.

Keep this about us story light and warm-hearted. A bit of playfulness and humour can also be a great way to engage with your wedding guests. Whether you write in first person or third person is completely up to you; there are no rules! Write your story together as a couple, or even relay your own versions to show two different perspectives. Remember, it doesn’t have to be an essay! A couple of creative paragraphs describing your first encounter, engagement story, mutual interests, and personality traits are a great way to provide fun insight into your unique relationship.

Think of your audience

Consider who you are writing to and for; as your friends and family will be attending your wedding day, you should write in a conversational and casual manner as if you were simply talking to them. Keep it genuine and honest to you two; there's no need to turn it into a CV or anything too lengthy. Make it fun, silly, and real but still acceptable for your partner's great-grandma, whom you have never met, to read!

Unsure where to start?

Try to enjoy this process and take a moment with your better half to spend some time reminiscing about your love story to date. If you're currently struggling to write this part of your wedding website and need a helping hand with where to start, grab a pen and paper and begin by answering these questions:

  • Where/when/how did you meet?
  • What did you do on your first date?
  • Talk about memorable adventures/dates/trips you’ve been on
  • What are your shared interests, hobbies, and activities?
  • List out the big moments: moving in together, buying your first home, if/when you have. If you've added kids and pets to the crew
  • Funny memories and stories
  • If you're hosting a destination wedding, state why you chose that location
  • Think about the things you love about each other (this is a fun piece to write separately)
  • The proposal story (obviously!)

Allow your wedding website design guide you

More often than not, your wedding website builder will give you a range of templates to choose from to suit your wedding theme. The template will give you a space to enter your wedding story and will often give you a nice example to read before you get started with your own. Have a look at the space you've got to play with, and let the template guide you. If it looks too short or too long, it will be obvious when you preview your design. You simply want to give your guests a nice, enjoyable few paragraphs to read because chances are that if you go much longer, your carefully crafted words might get overlooked.

A picture is worth a thousand words

If you're really not feeling that a traditional or silly wedding story is right for you, there are lots of creative alternatives you could do instead:

  • You could create a video. Set up a camera on a tripod and tell your story. If you want to get really fancy, you could edit the video to include snapshots of your life with your fiancé over the years. If not, just set up a camera somewhere with good lighting and tell your story. What a nice keepsake to watch back in years to come!
  • Create an illustration. Are you or your partner artistic? Put it to good use. Use those skills to create an artistic story of your life together. It could be a comic-style visual story, a series of paintings or drawings, or any other collection of your artistic skills that represents your love story your friends and family will be wowed
  • A fun option could be to create an illustrative timeline that shows the major moments of your love story. You can add photos or graphics to create a super interesting visual timeline. Pro tip: There are tonnes of free places on the internet that will help you make DIY graphics, timelines, and more—you don’t have to be a graphic designer to embrace this one!

Don't sweat the small stuff

Whether this part of building your wedding website has you stumped or you think it could be one of the most enjoyable parts to date, however you’re feeling, don't let this part of the wedding planning process get the better of you. Don't overthink it, and remember, two heads are better than one. Write a few drafts and send them to a loved one for a once-over. Whatever works - go with that; your love story is unique to you, so don't be afraid to share it!
