Our Story
Laura had been fascinated by the Spanish language and South American culture since her youth. She learned the basics in school, but her desire to immerse herself deeper in this world never faded. In 2013, she decided to improve her language skills and moved to Buenos Aires, the city of Tango, for a few months to attend a language school. It was an exhilarating time filled with unforgettable experiences and amazing people she met along the way. Among them were Sina and Filip, two university friends from Hamburg, with whom Laura formed a particularly close bond during her time at the school.
Sina and Filip would later play a pivotal role in the story of Laura and Torge. A year after their time together in Buenos Aires, they invited Laura to join them on a trip to Barcelona, where they were vacationing with friends from Hamburg. Always ready for an adventure, Laura spontaneously planned a weekend getaway and flew to the Catalan city in late August 2014.
The trip began with a magical moment: fresh off the plane, Laura made her way to Barceloneta Beach. Dragging her suitcase through the warm sand, she finally met the group. And it was there, in that moment, that she met Torge for the first time.
Torge was one of the friends from Hamburg who had joined the vacation group. Their eyes met amidst the Mediterranean breeze and the sound of the waves. What seemed like a simple coincidence would soon unfold into a love story that would transcend time and distance.
Distance became the first major challenge they had to navigate. Torge left for a year of study in Seattle, while Laura was living in Luxembourg. Their first trip together after that initial encounter in August was at the end of October, when Laura made the bold decision to fly directly to the sleepless city in the Pacific Northwest. It was certainly a leap of faith – after only three days of knowing Torge, traveling 8,000 kilometers to see him might have seemed like a rash decision to some. But Laura was determined to give it a chance.
What followed was a wonderful week filled with new experiences and budding romance. Their last evening together was Halloween, a holiday famously celebrated in the US. Dressed as a cat and a sailor, Laura and Torge ventured out to enjoy the festivities. That night, in his charming way, Torge asked if he could call Laura his girlfriend. Her playful response? A “meow” of agreement.
As some of you may know, Laura has a history with flights, and after an unforgettable Halloween night, she missed her flight back to Europe on 1 November. What could have been a stressful situation turned into a bonus – a few extra hours together in Seattle, which both gladly embraced.
What followed was a year of countless flights between Europe and the West Coast. Eventually, after completing his studies in the US, Torge decided to pack his bags and move in with Laura. And, as they say, the rest is history.
